How did the methods of governing migration change after the „Arab Spring“? Considered for some time as regions from where emigrants originated, Arab-speaking countries in North Africa are today transit and immigration countries themselves. People from sub-Saharan Africa or refugees fleeing from the Syrian war are trying to reach Europe from these areas, while countries such as Libya or the Gulf monarchies are experiencing massive immigration of people relocating in search of work. Both governments and civil societies in these countries have reacted differently to the changes: in Morocco and Tunisia, antiracist solidarity campaigns emerged. In Libya, acts of brutality prevail, and in Egypt, state repression is common. Paris-based author and lawyer Bernhard Schmid will be discussing these developments from the perspective of international solidarity, the proclaimed universality of human rights, and the radical changes in North Africa since 2011.
