To the wind, we whispered of driftings | A Malagasy Story

With RYM JALIL and Muhammad Amin

From July to November 2024 the Participatory Residency Program is currently being shaped by RYM JALIL (they/them) - poet, visual anthropologist and food artist. Jalil's work orbits around relationships between memory, social space and cultural significations of food and coffee.

Conceived by Rym Jalil, the three-part film programme To the wind, we whispered of driftings addresses the representation and representation of African images and stories that have been historically shaped by colonial and hegemonic structures. It highlights how African films have often been reduced to ethnographic material rather than serving as a means of expression or knowledge exchange. The films presented show individual and emotional stories that resist simplistic representations and emphasise personal experiences. They deal with themes such as love, revenge and identity in different African contexts and offer alternative perspectives.

On the third of three dates, the film A Malagasy Story (2023, 81 min) by Luck Razanajaona will be shown: Kwame, a young man in present-day Madagascar, has to earn his living with hard labour, for example in a sapphire mine. A traumatic event in the mine leads him to reflect on his situation and the injustices in his country and to recover the memory of his father, a musician and political activist who disappeared during a demonstration in the turbulent 1970s. Gradually, he also senses that the instinct to rebel and the desire to fight are reviving in him.
