To the wind, we whispered of driftings | Akasha

With RYM JALIL and Muhammad Amin

From July to November 2024 the Participatory Residency Program is currently being shaped by RYM JALIL (they/them) - poet, visual anthropologist and food artist. Jalil's work orbits around relationships between memory, social space and cultural significations of food and coffee.

Conceived by Rym Jalil, the three-part film programme To the wind, we whispered of driftings addresses the representation and representation of African images and stories that have been historically shaped by colonial and hegemonic structures. It highlights how African films have often been reduced to ethnographic material rather than serving as a means of expression or knowledge exchange. The films presented show individual and emotional stories that resist simplistic representations and emphasise personal experiences. They deal with themes such as love, revenge and identity in different African contexts and offer alternative perspectives.

On the first of three dates, the film Akasha (2018, 78 min) by Hajooj Kuka will be shown: Adnan is a Sudanese revolutionary who is considered a war hero. His love for his AK47 rifle isequalled only by his feelings for Lina, his long-suffering sweetheart. When Adnan is late toreturn to his military unit after his leave, army commander Blues launches a kasha: the roundingup and arresting of truant soldiers. Adnan is caught-off guard and makes a run for it withpacifist Absi. The two unlikely friends plot ways to reunite Adnan with his gun – and with Lina– while avoiding their fellow soldiers. Through a series of wry and humorous incidents over 24hours, we explore life and ideology in rebel-held areas of Sudan.
