Sonic Shadow aka Satch Hoyt
with SATCH HOYT
There is a mnemonic network of sound which was carried across the Atlantic during slavery. Visual artist and composer Satch Hoyt calls it the Eternal Afro Sonic Signifier. It was the sole companion during the forced migration of the Middle Passage, and it is what created jazz in Congo Square, New Orleans and all the other genres of music in the Caribbean Basin and the Americas, plus Drum and Bass in London and Hip Hop in New York. It is this generative sonic migration that Satch Hoyt aka Sonic Shadow explores in a musical practice closely linked to his work as a visual artist. Pre-recorded texts and soundscapes originally composed for installations and sculptures come together in multi-layered improvisations. Field recordings fuse with frequency electronica, charting the journey from the slave ship to the space ship in Afro-futurist textures.
