Arkadiy Kots first went viral in 2011 when two of its members, poet Kirill Medvedev and artist Nikolai Oleinikov, started an impromptu concert at a protest in Moscow, for which they were immediately thrown into a waiting paddy van. There, they continued their concert with Medvedev’s translation of L’Estaca, an old Catalan anti-Franco tune. Once adopted as the anthem of the Solidarność movement in the 1980s, it now became an emblem of the protests against Putin’s reelection once the video of their prison van performance went online. Arkady Kots is named after a revolutionary poet who translated “L’Internationale” into Russian. Performing in Cologne for the first time, the band’s repertoire reflects their political position: early anarchist ballads, workers’ songs, Russian revolutionary poetry, poems by anarchist poet Alexander Brener, and translations of Woody Guthrie songs and original tunes are brought into motion by a growing ensemble as “riot folk” – as biting as it is joyously hopeful.
