What does it mean for performers to live and work under postindustrial conditions? At the center of dancer and choreographer Lili M. Rampre’s research project As We Begin, So Shall We Go lie the subjective stories of dance practitioners. A group of dancers carry on a conversation about a common topic, then engage in a reenactment of the discussion over a period of time. As their understanding of the substance of the conversation grows, so does a consciousness of how movement itself might become an expression of freedom, countering the rigid instruction to repeat.
