To the wind, we whispered of driftings | Public Toilet Africa

With RYM JALIL and Muhammad Amin

From July to November 2024 the Participatory Residency Program is currently being shaped by RYM JALIL (they/them) - poet, visual anthropologist and food artist. Jalil's work orbits around relationships between memory, social space and cultural significations of food and coffee.

Conceived by Rym Jalil, the three-part film programme To the wind, we whispered of driftings addresses the representation and representation of African images and stories that have been historically shaped by colonial and hegemonic structures. It highlights how African films have often been reduced to ethnographic material rather than serving as a means of expression or knowledge exchange. The films presented show individual and emotional stories that resist simplistic representations and emphasise personal experiences. They deal with themes such as love, revenge and identity in different African contexts and offer alternative perspectives.

On the second of three dates, the film Public Toilet Africa (2021, 95 min) by Kofi Ofosu-Yeboah will be shown: When reticent Ama returns to the city where she was gifted to a white art collector as a littlegirl, the quest to reclaim her stolen childhood quickly goes into a tailspin when she recruits anex-lover on her mission. Escaping the city on a remote country road, their journey is beset witha series of bizarre encounters as their fate is tied to that of two passengers they pick up.
