How the Leopard got his claws

With SARAH FATIMA SCHÜTZ

Commissioned by the ADKDW and in collaboration with the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum, Ghanaian artist Yussif Musah has created a powerful mural and exhibition project that digs deep into the photographic archives of the RJM and the Documentation Center and Museum for Migration in Germany.

What happens when photographic documents from the recent present meet photographs from the colonial era? What connections can be made and what continuities can be identified? Sarah Fatima Schütz, Coordinator of the Artistic Program ADKDW, gives a Guided Tour about this mural.

Yussif Musah, born in 1997, studied painting and sculpture in Kumasi, Ghana. As part of the exhibition Not Afraid of Art, the artist is creating a mural for the public space in Cologne. His research led him to the Documentation Center and Museum on Migration in Germany e.V | DOMiD aswell as to the photographic collection of the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum, among others. By exploring the lines of connection between and within the photographic finds, Yussif Musah transforms the restorative tasks into questions of representation.
