Every image is a reproduction as every birth is. Nothing is fully original but nothing is completely a copy either. Films in this package deal with complex legacies of making images / giving birth, the overlapping role of labor and the creativity that lies within.

SUPERMAN OF MALEGAON

Malegaon is a dusty, noisy and dense city in India, 200 kms from Bombay, the industrial hub of popular cinema. Malegaon produces cloths and cinema – both labored by small units of family and extended clans with less than rudimentary infrastructures. The shadow of cinema falls on the power looms and the sound of the looms enters the studios.
Malegaon films overtly express its allegiance to Hollywood and Bollywood cinema, and yet display extra-ordinary originality and creativity in terms of storytelling and production process. It is a distinct case of making original art in the form of copy. Superman of Malegaon is a story about a film being made / improvised in Malegaon – one that has its genesis in the Hollywood archetype, but belongs to the other end of the cinema-universe.

Septuagenarian ceramist Semi Awa Camara is known for her terracotta sculptures which address the intersections of maternity, fertility, and myth. Her fantastical figurines feature multi-headed creatures carrying, caring for, or giving birth to their offspring. While the works distantly resonate certain mystic practice and folk imagination of the region, they are peer-less in terms of formal convention, narrative style or any known historical / ideological references. Stigmatized by the community for not being able to bear any child, Camara’s feminity, maternity and creativity amalgamate into producing a universe with different temporality.
Filmmaker Kandé Senghor turns into a window through which the creatures and their creator could communicate with the present.
