It is sometimes said that nationalism is the swamp where political movements go to die. In how far does this apply to struggles for liberation from colonial oppression, and how can we describe their “life after death”? How do new virulent forms of identity politics take over narratives of emancipation, perverting them into their own opposite, and how does this takeover affect the politics of representation? These and many more were the questions raised so far in the international research project Perverse Decolonization. Its final research meeting, held over two days in Cologne, continues to query the deadlocks and double-binds facing political subjectivities under post- and neo-colonial conditions, looking for a way out of the cul-de-sac of identity. Expert inputs pick up the threads of previous research meetings in Warsaw, Holon (Israel), Hong Kong and Chicago (USA) presenting them for common discussion. A lecture performance by participant JOAR NANGO reacts to the project’s themes, while a final panel discussion probes the prospects of a “messy” or “dirty” universalism and opens the discussion to the audience.
