The Moral of Xerox: Ethical Complexities of Appropriation
with CLARA BALAGUER and FLORIAN CRAMER
In this discussion, artist and activist Clara Balaguer and media theorist Florian Cramer look at the gray zones and blind spots of cultural appropriation. They reflect upon the history of appropriation as a cultural strategy aimed at subverting bourgeois notions of authorship and intellectual property but also the ways it is oblivious to its own relationship to power and its susceptibility to misuse. Weighing in on the current debates and their condemnation of cultural appropriation as a potentially racist or sexist practice resting upon white privilege, Balaguer and Cramer ask what we can learn from the attack on bourgeois forms of ownership. What are the new perspectives for the redistribution of knowledge in places less suffocated by intellectual property laws?
