Class Hatred, Only Joking

In the performance Class Hatred, Only Joking, artist Ines Doujak and writer John Barker join forces as the sleazy comedy double act Schmuck and Schlumpe. Their jokes, some spoken, some visual, are offensive to the extreme, their humor racist and sexist in the worst of ways. What do you call a black man with a regular job, who sleeps in the same bed every night and doesn’t collect welfare? A convict. Who is fat, stupid, and thinks wearing an imitation of a Ralph Lauren is chic? Women claiming welfare. Schmuck and Schlumpe explore the long history of structured prejudices and turn the nastiest possible humor into a weapon against itself, showing how the disclaimer of “only joking” normalizes fear and hatred of the poor, the basics of which have remained the same from the 16th century to now.
